Diamond workers in India are expressing deep concerns over potential large-scale job losses as the global recession continues to impact the industry. Many are now calling for urgent government intervention to protect their livelihoods.
These fears have intensified following the recent 10-day closure of Kiran Gems, which began on August 17. Reports suggest that numerous smaller and medium-sized diamond polishing firms are also resorting to shutdowns or reduced working hours.
The Diamond Workers Union Gujarat (DWUG) voiced their concerns in a Facebook post, stating, “Due to the recession in the diamond industry, there is a concern that a large number of artisans may abandon the industry.” The union emphasized that without prompt government support, the diamond industry, which is crucial to the region, could face significant challenges.
The DWUG warned that during economic downturns, many skilled artisans leave the industry, leading to potential shortages of experienced workers in the future. “To prevent a recurrence of the situation that occurred in 2008, the government and industrialists should stand by the artisans and support them during these difficult times,” the union added.
Bhavesh Tank, vice-president of DWUG, told The Blunt Times newspaper that some companies are laying off 25 to 50 diamond artisans at a time. He suggested that this tactic is being used to avoid disclosing the true extent of job losses and to evade responsibilities under labor laws, such as paying bonuses and other perks.
The ongoing uncertainty has left many diamond workers fearing for their future, as they await support from the government and industry leaders to navigate these challenging times.
