In a move aimed at bolstering the state’s gold jewellery industry, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has unveiled plans for a ₹126 crore jewellery industrial park in Coimbatore. This project is expected to enhance the city’s position as a global hub for gold jewellery manufacturing while generating thousands of employment opportunities. The jewellery park, located in Kurichi, will cater to the needs of both manufacturers and artisans, providing state-of-the-art facilities and fostering growth in the sector.
Coimbatore to Become a Global Jewellery Hub
Coimbatore, already a major player in the global gold jewellery market, will soon have a dedicated industrial park designed to streamline the city’s jewellery manufacturing processes. The announcement was made during the foundation stone-laying ceremony for the Thanthai Periyar Library on November 6, 2024, where Chief Minister Stalin outlined the key features of the new project.
The ₹126 crore investment will go into establishing a modern jewellery park in the Kurichi area of Coimbatore, which is expected to have a significant impact on both the local and state economies. The park will be equipped with a range of essential facilities to support the jewellery sector, including a National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration (NABL)-accredited testing laboratory.
Employment Opportunities and Economic Impact
The jewellery park will serve as a critical resource for Coimbatore’s thriving gold jewellery industry. It is expected to generate direct employment for 2,000 people, with an additional 1,500 indirect jobs, according to the Chief Minister’s announcement. These jobs will not only benefit the local workforce but also help create a robust ecosystem that supports the entire jewellery supply chain, from design to production.
“This park will cater to the specific needs of the jewellery sector in Coimbatore, further establishing the city as a global leader in gold jewellery manufacturing,” said Stalin. He emphasized that the jewellery park would also contribute to the state’s economic development by providing an industrial space designed to meet international standards and facilitate growth for manufacturers, small-scale producers, and artisans alike.
Other Key Infrastructure Projects in Coimbatore
In addition to the jewellery park, Chief Minister Stalin highlighted several other major infrastructure projects slated for Coimbatore. These initiatives are part of the state government’s broader strategy to boost economic development, improve urban infrastructure, and create jobs.
Thanthai Periyar Library: A Hub for Knowledge and Learning
One of the most significant projects announced by the Chief Minister is the construction of the Thanthai Periyar Library, which will be located on the premises of the Coimbatore jail in Gandhipuram. The library, which will be built at an estimated cost of ₹300 crore, will cover a sprawling area of over 1.98 lakh square feet.
“The Thanthai Periyar Library will serve as an invaluable resource for Coimbatore’s residents, providing a space dedicated to learning and knowledge for future generations,” Stalin said during the event. The library is expected to open its doors in January 2026, and it will play an important role in enriching the cultural and educational landscape of the city.
The library will not only house a vast collection of books but will also serve as a community space for events, workshops, and seminars. It is expected to become a key resource for students, educators, and the general public, helping to foster a culture of knowledge and learning in the region.
Multi-Modal Logistics Park: Enhancing Connectivity and Infrastructure
Another major infrastructure project announced by Stalin is the development of a multi-modal logistics park with an investment of ₹300 crore. This logistics park, which will be situated near Sulur, is expected to play a critical role in improving the transportation and distribution infrastructure in Coimbatore.
The multi-modal logistics park will integrate various forms of transportation, including road, rail, and air, to facilitate the smooth movement of goods. This will not only boost local industries but also improve the city’s overall connectivity with national and international markets. The logistics park is anticipated to drive economic growth by making it easier for businesses in Coimbatore to move goods efficiently.
Aviation Technology Park: A Future-Focused Development
In a bid to strengthen Coimbatore’s position as an industrial and technological hub, Stalin also announced the construction of an aviation technology park in the area. The aviation park will be developed with an investment of ₹320 crore, marking another step in the state government’s efforts to diversify the city’s economic base. This park will focus on the development of cutting-edge aviation technologies, and it is expected to attract both national and international companies to set up operations in Coimbatore.
The aviation technology park will support the growing demand for skilled professionals in the aviation industry, while also positioning Coimbatore as a key player in the global aviation sector. It will create a range of employment opportunities for engineers, technicians, and other specialists, further contributing to the region’s economic development.
IT Park Expansion: A Boost to Coimbatore’s Tech Ecosystem
Chief Minister Stalin also revealed plans for a new IT park to be constructed on 17.17 acres of land near the ELCOSEZ in Tidel Park, Coimbatore. This new IT hub is expected to provide employment for approximately 36,000 people, further expanding the city’s role as an IT and technology center in Tamil Nadu.
The new IT park will offer state-of-the-art facilities designed to meet the needs of technology companies, start-ups, and other businesses in the IT sector. With Coimbatore’s growing reputation as a major tech hub, this new development is expected to attract both national and international firms to set up operations in the city.
The Chief Minister noted that this IT park would significantly boost Coimbatore’s economy and contribute to the development of the region’s digital infrastructure, making it an attractive destination for investment in the tech sector.
Avinashi Road Flyover Extension: Easing Traffic Flow
In addition to the above projects, Stalin also announced the extension of the Avinashi Road flyover from Chinniyampalayam to Neelambur, covering a 5-km stretch. This flyover extension is expected to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion along one of Coimbatore’s busiest roads. The project will be developed at an estimated cost of ₹760 crore and is expected to significantly ease travel times for commuters and freight transport.
The flyover extension is part of the state’s ongoing efforts to improve urban infrastructure and enhance the quality of life for Coimbatore’s residents. The project is also expected to contribute to the city’s long-term growth by improving its transportation network.
A Vision for Coimbatore’s Future
With these announcements, Chief Minister Stalin has set the stage for Coimbatore’s transformation into a global hub for industry, technology, and education. The combination of infrastructure improvements, industrial parks, and educational resources will not only create thousands of new jobs but also position Coimbatore as a key player in Tamil Nadu’s economic future.
The planned jewellery park, in particular, is expected to have a lasting impact on the city’s gold jewellery industry, attracting manufacturers and artisans from across the globe. Combined with the other infrastructure developments, these projects reflect a forward-thinking approach to urban growth, one that balances economic development with the enhancement of quality of life for the city’s residents.
As Coimbatore continues to grow and evolve, these projects are poised to make a significant contribution to the city’s standing on the global map, setting a new standard for industrial development, education, and technological advancement in Tamil Nadu.
