Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly changing industries, and the jewelry sector is no exception. AI tools now enable designers to bring concepts to life in seconds, a process that once took months. This innovation has the potential to streamline creativity and improve efficiency. However, designers must understand how to properly prompt AI to get useful and meaningful results.
Steven Grotell, design director at Delmar Jewelers, believes that creating effective AI prompts is a skill that requires experience. He explains that understanding customer preferences is essential for getting the best results. In a recent project using Midjourney, an AI design tool, Grotell used consumer insights to guide the design process.
Once Grotell received the AI-generated visuals, he focused on transforming them into unique jewelry pieces. He advises other designers to look beyond the polished images produced by AI and focus on the imperfections. “Any good AI can generate impressive images,” Grotell says. “But as a designer, your challenge is to find what stands out and use it to create something truly original.”
During his search for inspiration, Grotell found a specific AI design that caught his attention. It was a subtle detail on the ring’s shank—a new concept combining bezel and prong settings. This idea, which Grotell had never considered before, was the spark for a potential breakthrough design, despite the challenges involved in making it a reality.
