York Regional Police have arrested six individuals following a smash-and-grab jewelry store robbery in Markham.
The robbery took place just after 12:00 p.m. at Lukfook Jewellery, located in Markville Shopping Centre at McCowan Road and Highway 7. Several suspects were seen using hammers to smash glass display cases in an attempt to steal items, according to Constable Kevin Nebrija.
A video of the incident, posted to Reddit, shows masked men violently breaking the windows and front door of the store. While police have not yet verified the authenticity of the video, they confirmed they are aware of it circulating online.
No injuries were reported inside the mall, and there is no indication that firearms were used during the robbery. However, police say a Honda Civic, believed to be the suspects’ getaway vehicle, crashed into another car nearby. Upon responding to the crash scene, officers saw several suspects fleeing and apprehended four individuals at the scene. Two others were arrested in a nearby restaurant washroom.
The individuals in the rear-ended vehicle suffered minor injuries and were taken to a local hospital for evaluation.
“We are still working to determine the exact number of outstanding suspects,” Const. Nebrija said, noting that the number of people in the suspect vehicle at the time of the crash remains unclear.
Police acknowledged that such incidents can cause distress to mall employees and shoppers. “We understand the fear these kinds of events can cause, especially with the loud sounds of glass being smashed,” Nebrija said. “These are targeted incidents, and we urge the community to remain vigilant and share any information they might have.”
The police have not yet provided details on the suspects’ ages, the stolen items, or any formal charges.
