A brooch once worn by Jacqueline Kennedy during her time as First Lady sold for more than double its high estimate at Freeman’s | Hindman’s 378-lot Important Jewelry auction last Thursday in New York City.
The brooch, featuring a gold Grecian coin at the center of an 18k gold wreath with emerald accents, was expected to fetch between $6,000 and $8,000. However, it soared to $20,955. The piece was accompanied by a photograph of Kennedy wearing it during an April 1961 reception at the White House State Dining Room for the wives of American Society of Newspaper Editors members.
Freeman’s | Hindman’s inaugural Important Jewelry sale grossed $3.8 million in total. The top lot was a platinum ring featuring more than 16 carats of diamonds. Estimated at $80,000–$120,000, the ring fetched an impressive $190,500. The ring included a 10.89-carat round brilliant-cut diamond and a pair of yellow gold infinity bands set with approximately 6 carats of princess-cut diamonds.
Kennedy’s brooch had previously been purchased during the 1996 Estate of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis sale at Sotheby’s. For the Freeman’s | Hindman’s auction, it came from a private collection in Lake Forest, Illinois. The lot included the original Sotheby’s box, auction tag, catalog, and the book Jacqueline Kennedy: The White House Years.
