Chelico has expanded her jewelry business with the opening of her storefront at 346 Plandome Road in Manhasset, bringing her designs to the local community and beyond.
“I love when people say, ‘Oh, I want this’ or ‘I love this, can you make me this?’” Chelico shared. “It’s such a rewarding business because everyone is happy when they’re buying something special.”
A former healthcare professional, Chelico was introduced to the jewelry world through her husband’s family business, Turkan Jewelry in Levittown. She worked weekends and holidays at the store, which sparked her passion for the craft. “I learned a lot about the business, beyond just the jewelry itself,” she said.
Chelico began designing her own pieces in 2018, and soon her creations were being worn by those around her. Before opening her storefront, she sold her jewelry through boutiques and online. However, she prefers the personal connection of in-person sales, where customers can try on pieces and see how they feel.
“Sometimes you try something on, and it looks amazing once you wear it,” Chelico explained. “I love seeing that reaction in people.”
Although art was always a hobby, Chelico initially pursued a career in healthcare. Still, she’s found that her background in math and science plays an essential role in her jewelry designs. “When creating small, delicate pieces, everything needs to be precise, from measurements to the cut of the stones,” she noted. “Understanding the properties of stones and what works together is crucial.”
While her husband’s family business, Turkan Jewelry, focuses on traditional designs, Chelico’s jewelry is distinct, featuring delicate pieces that merge geometric styles with nature symbolism. A prime example is her honeycomb designs, which incorporate the hexagonal structure of the honeycomb and the symbolic significance of bees.
Her pieces are versatile, allowing for customization to suit both day and night events. “My jewelry is for everyone, no matter the occasion,” Chelico said.
The community in Manhasset has welcomed her store with open arms. “I love it when new customers walk in and leave with their new favorite piece of jewelry,” she added.
