A 25-year-old salesman was fatally shot during an attempted robbery outside Mahalaxmi Jewelers in Shahapur on Saturday night. The victim, identified as Dinesh Kumar Manaram Chaudhary, was one of two individuals targeted by two assailants on a motorcycle.
The incident occurred around 9:15 PM as Chaudhary and three employees were closing the shop and heading home. The assailants fired one bullet at Chaudhary and another employee, injuring Chaudhary. While the other employee managed to escape unharmed, the attackers stole a bag containing only documents and a register book before fleeing the scene.
Upon hearing gunfire, local residents rushed to the location and found Chaudhary lying in a pool of blood. He was quickly taken to a nearby hospital, but due to the severity of his injuries, he was transferred to a hospital in Thane, where he was declared dead on Sunday after further treatment.
The Shahapur police responded promptly to the scene and launched an investigation into the shooting. A case has been registered against two unknown assailants. Preliminary findings suggest that one bullet was fired at close range, striking Chaudhary in the waist.
Deputy Superintendent of Police, Milind Shinde, stated, “Initial investigations suggest the crime may have been committed with the intent to rob. However, we are exploring other possible motives as well. Eight investigative teams, including members of the local crime branch, have been formed to look into different aspects of the case. One team is reviewing CCTV footage from nearby areas.”
The investigation is ongoing as police work to identify the perpetrators and understand the full scope of the crime.
