A man is in the hospital after a violent smash-and-grab jewelry store robbery in the Greater Toronto Area on Sunday evening. The incident occurred when suspects crashed a vehicle into a jewelry store in Rexdale, Toronto.
Toronto police were called to the scene near Islington Avenue and Albion Road just before 5:30 p.m. Police say the suspects drove a vehicle into the store, Raj’s Jewellery, before storming inside and stealing merchandise. Video footage of the robbery, shared online, shows at least three masked suspects wielding sledgehammers inside the store moments after the crash.
During the robbery, one person inside the store was injured. Police confirmed that the victim, identified as the store’s co-owner Sadia Sharma’s husband, was attacked by the suspects and taken to the hospital with serious injuries. As of Monday, he remains in critical condition.
Local business owner Mona Choudhry, who runs the Mahek Salon nearby, expressed shock at the violence. “What happened yesterday, I’m so scared,” she said, reflecting on the rare and frightening nature of the crime in the area.
Toronto police have canvassed the neighborhood for video surveillance footage but had made no arrests by Monday afternoon. Investigators continue to look for the suspects involved in the robbery.
