The National Gem and Jewellery Authority (NGJA) has announced plans to establish an International Gem and Jewellery Centre to elevate Sri Lanka’s gem and jewellery industry on the global stage. Naveen Sooriyarachchi, Chairman of the NGJA, shared the news at the conclusion of Sri Lanka’s largest gem and jewellery exhibition, “Gem Sri Lanka – 2025,” held at the Cinnamon Beach Hotel in Bentota.
The new centre will feature a variety of facilities, including showrooms, shops, a gem museum, and laboratory services to test the quality of gems and jewellery. It will also provide freight transport services and support export activities, creating a comprehensive hub for the industry.
However, Sooriyarachchi noted that the sector has faced significant challenges, particularly due to unstable and inconsistent tax policies in Sri Lanka, which have hindered growth. The exhibition was held under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and the participation of Minister of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development Sunil Handunnetti. This event, organized for the second time by the China Fort Gem and Jewellery Trade Association (CGJTA) with support from the NGJA and the Export Development Board, is set to become an annual gathering.
