Despite a sharp rise in gold prices, sales of gold jewelry in Guangdong Province, in southern China, continue to climb. This trend is driven by strong cultural preferences and gold’s appeal as an investment.
Traditional Chinese designs, such as the Zhuanyun Bead, which symbolizes good luck, are particularly popular during Chinese New Year. Gold is valued during this time as a secure and auspicious way to store wealth.
“I think buying gold is a way of rewarding myself. If I buy other things, they might lose value quickly,” said a buyer in Shantou City.
Another buyer shared, “I’ve noticed that gold prices are going up. I can just keep these pieces of jewelry, and they hold their value.”
Younger buyers are also contributing to the growing demand, with a new trend of gold phone stickers featuring auspicious messages like “wish you wealth.”
