The Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) has unveiled the Laboratory Grown Materials Standard (LGMS), a set of voluntary guidelines aimed at promoting ethical business practices in the diamond industry. Developed since 2021, the LGMS covers a broad range of standards, including legal compliance, due diligence, human rights, appraisal and grading, and environmental management.
The standard outlines 28 provisions under five key objectives. RJC members will have a one-year transitional period to voluntarily adhere to these standards after the release, allowing them time to align their operations with the new guidelines.
RJC Chairman Dave Meleski emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating, “With the LGMS, we are not just setting a standard; we are setting a vision for a future where elegance and ethics go hand in hand.”
The RJC, a global standards-setting organization for the watch and jewellery industry, represents over 2,000 members in 74 countries. Following a two-year tenure, Melanie Grant, the organization’s executive director, recently announced her resignation.
