ALOR GAJAH, May 21 ― A housewife fell victim to a scam, losing jewellery valued at approximately RM20,000 after being lured into assisting a foreigner in claiming a lottery prize in Alor Gajah.
According to Alor Gajah district police chief Supt Ashari Abu Samah, the incident took place last Saturday at a supermarket in Masjid Tanah. The victim, a 58-year-old woman, was approached by three men and a woman, all believed to be Indonesians aged between 40 and 50.
“The four individuals promised the victim RM50,000 if she helped them claim a lottery prize, asserting that they lacked identification cards. Allegedly, the prize amounted to RM500,000 for winning the first prize. Agreeing to assist, the victim accompanied the suspects in a car to a lottery shop approximately two kilometers away from the supermarket.
“During the car journey, the suspects requested the victim’s jewellery as collateral to ensure she wouldn’t flee after claiming the prize money,” stated Ashari in a release today.
The victim complied, surrendering her necklace with a locket and a bangle valued at RM20,000, before exiting the vehicle with the purported winning ticket, while the suspects remained in the car.
“Upon reaching the shop, the victim discovered the suspects and their car were nowhere to be found.
“Realizing she had been deceived, the woman promptly filed a report at the Kuala Sungai Baru police station around 2 pm on the day of the incident,” Ashari disclosed.
