Could you share some insights into your background before your involvement with John Hardy?

My journey into the realm of luxury commenced with a renowned pen manufacturer, Montblanc, a brand that has flourished over a century into a paragon of luxury. Originating from my hometown in Germany, my career then extended across the United States and eventually led me to Asia, where I spent over two decades, primarily in Hong Kong and Japan. During my tenure, I not only contributed to the pen division but also spearheaded the launch of their jewelry line. My time in Japan, spanning over six years, deeply enamored me with the diverse and enchanting cultures of Asia—an experience akin to that of John Hardy, a Canadian who discovered Bali’s allure and remained rooted in its splendor.

John Hardy’s jewelry is renowned for its gender-neutral design. Could you elaborate on this philosophy?

At John Hardy, we eschew the conventional practice of tailoring designs exclusively for either gender. Unlike many contemporaries, our approach is organic rather than stratagem-driven. Our success stems from authenticity—I don’t ponder over what our customers desire and then tailor designs accordingly. Instead, I believe in staying true to our identity.

How would you characterize the John Hardy spring-summer 2024 collection?

As a German saying suggests, the future thrives on a robust heritage and foundation. The enduring success of esteemed luxury brands lies in their adherence to tradition while embracing evolution. The Naga collection exemplifies this ethos. While paying homage to tradition, the collection also reflects global influences, seamlessly blending European and Asian design sensibilities.

If you had the chance to pursue an alternative career, what would it be and why?

Since childhood, I’ve been captivated by photography, cherishing the art of capturing moments and experiences. Additionally, my stint in Japan kindled a passion for woodworking, leading me to establish my own woodworking studio. Collaborating with masters across various crafts has enriched my journey. If I were to chart a different course, architecture—a realm brimming with beauty and creativity—would undoubtedly captivate me.

What emotions or messages does John Hardy’s jewelry convey?

Our jewelry embodies a celebration of life, infused with the vitality of nature. It encourages reverence for nature’s beauty and fosters self-expression, reflecting the inner joy and freedom synonymous with Bali—the birthplace of our brand. John Hardy serves as a conduit for individuals to embrace life’s fleeting moments, prioritize self-care, and share their exuberance with the world.
