Government Assures Travelers: Personal Jewellery Exempt from Gold Smuggling Crackdown

by Jasmine

As the Guyanese government prepares to tighten laws against gold smuggling, Attorney General Anil Nandlall has assured travelers that personal jewellery they wear will remain exempt. He explained that historically, customs laws have always exempted personal jewellery and items worn by individuals. This exemption means that ordinary jewellery worn during travel or daily life will not be affected by the new legislative measures aimed at combating smuggling.

Nandlall highlighted that this exemption aligns with practices in other countries such as the US, Canada, and Europe. It allows travelers to carry their personal effects, including jewellery, without the need to declare them at airports or face additional burdens during their journeys.
