The luxury jewellery industry is constantly changing, blending timeless elegance with modern innovation. In 2024, five key trends are shaping this landscape.
We spoke with Michael Falocco, a jewellery designer at The Perth Mint and a Fellow of the Gemmological Association of Australia (FGAA), to explore these top trends.
1. Modern Heirlooms
Modern heirlooms are becoming increasingly popular. These pieces blend contemporary styles with classic elements and are designed to be cherished across generations. “The consumer desire for modern-day heirlooms is on the rise,” said Falocco. “Gender-neutral pendants, brooches, rings, and watches are in high demand. Many people are drawn to our customisation services to create bespoke designs that reflect their family values.”
2. Quiet Luxury
Quiet luxury focuses on subtlety and sophistication. “It’s all about those ‘if you know, you know’ jewellery pieces,” Falocco explained. People are gravitating towards jewellery that isn’t flashy but is made from the finest materials, such as Australian Origin Gold®, and exhibits exceptional craftsmanship, like the Argyle Treasures™ ring. This trend aligns with a broader movement towards sustainability and mindful consumption, where quality is more important than quantity.
3. Pearls
Pearls are making a comeback, shedding their old-fashioned image and appearing in fresh, modern designs. “Pearls can be worn with almost anything, including different types of jewellery in your existing collection,” Falocco said. The Perth Mint offers a curated collection of the finest pearls, including a range of Allure South Sea pearls.
4. Colour
Bold, vibrant colours are a major trend in luxury jewellery. Whether through gemstones or coloured diamonds, colour is taking center stage in current jewellery design. We’re seeing colour in jewellery maximalism, like big, bold earrings,” Falocco noted. “Colour is dominating runways and red carpets this year – think coloured diamonds, sapphires, emeralds, rubies, garnets, and morganite. Grand designs include clip-on and oversized studs in a glittering array of vibrant hues.”
5. Bespoke Jewellery
Personalisation is a key aspect of luxury, with bespoke jewellery leading the trend. Custom-designed pieces that reflect an individual’s taste and story are in high demand. “Self-expression and individuality in treasured jewellery pieces are becoming more popular, especially as mass production designs flood the market,” Falocco said. This trend is driven by the desire for unique pieces that resonate personally. “At The Perth Mint, we see more customers requesting our in-house jewellery designer to hand sketch and craft their desired forever piece, while also helping them select their favourite gemstone.”
