Jewelry Store Marks 45 Years Serving Jefferson Community

JEFFERSON — Jim and Sherry Hofstetter have been integral parts of Jefferson for 45 years. Alongside their children, they’ve operated J.R. Hofstetter, The Family Jeweler, located in the heart of Jefferson, drawing customers from across northeastern Ohio. Established in March 1979, the store has consistently catered to local families.

“My uncle ran this place for 26 years before us. It’s been a long-standing store,” Jim Hofstetter remarked, chatting with customers upon their return from vacation.

While the business has evolved, their commitment to customer satisfaction remains unchanged.

“Adapting is crucial in any business with changing times,” he noted.

One significant change over the 45 years has been the price of gold, which has soared from $45 to $2,400 per ounce.

“That’s a substantial change,” Jim Hofstetter acknowledged.

He also pointed out increases in metal prices essential for crafting jewelry and shifts in customer preferences across generations.

“Styles have evolved, coming full circle over the years,” he observed.

Engagement rings and various gifts, especially emeralds, rubies, and opals, are popular,” Hofstetter added. He highlighted their extensive custom jewelry services.

Their efforts have paid off, fostering loyalty across five generations of customers, some traveling from as far as Akron and Cleveland’s west side.

“Word of mouth has been crucial, especially since there are fewer full-service jewelry stores around,” Hofstetter explained. He noted a decline in jewelry outlets across Ashtabula County.

Despite changes, Hofstetter emphasized their love for the business, with his son Steffel now actively involved.
