The Railway Protection Force (RPF) detained a train passenger and recovered gold jewellery worth Rs 1.89 crore along with Rs 15 lakh in cash in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu on Wednesday.
The RPF team was conducting routine checks as part of “Operation Satark,” aimed at preventing the illegal transportation of contraband items and theft. During their inspection on the Chennai Egmore-Mangaluru Express, they detained a man under suspicion.
The passenger, identified as R. Lakshmanan, was travelling from Chennai Egmore to Trichy. During the search, the RPF team discovered the valuables in a black shoulder bag he was carrying. The seized items included 2796 grams of gold jewellery, valued at Rs 1.89 crore, and Rs 15 lakh in cash.
Upon inquiry, it was revealed that Lakshmanan was transporting the items for distribution in Madurai.
Lakshmanan, along with the seized items, was handed over to the Income Tax department for further investigation.
