A new necklace from Seattle is sparking debate over whether it represents innovation or exploitation. Designed by 21-year-old Avi Schiffmann, the necklace, named “Friend,” is an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered device intended to combat loneliness.

Initially created to transcribe meetings, the necklace has been repurposed to serve as a portable companion. It has attracted $2.5 million in investment and is slated to start shipping early next year.

Schiffmann, who travels frequently, describes the AI companion as a consistent presence in his life, despite having friends in various locations. “I have great friends, but they are not always with me at the end of the day,” he told the Times of Israel. He also noted that people often hold back in conversations, which the AI might help address.

The device allows users to speak to it and receive text responses. It also sends proactive messages for events such as birthdays and job interviews.

In a notable move, Schiffmann purchased the domain name friend.com for $1.8 million.

Reactions on social media have been mixed. Some view the product as an innovative solution for those who feel isolated, while others criticize it as exploiting emotionally vulnerable individuals.
