In 2006, Sam Thomas established Sam’s Fine Jewelry in Sikeston, Missouri, with little more than his expertise as a goldsmith. Despite initial challenges, Thomas’s dedication and resilience have driven the business to new heights.
“We went through a lot of hardships, and it’s what gave us our strength. That’s why I say there’s nothing that can stop us,” said Thomas.
On Friday, November 8, the company celebrated the grand opening of its second location at 113 S. High St., Suite B, in Jackson. Like the original store, the new location offers a wide selection of jewelry, including rings, earrings, bracelets, and necklaces.
A Family and Team Effort
Sam Thomas co-owns the Sikeston and Jackson stores with his wife, Paige, who played a pivotal role in the business’s expansion. Thomas credits her vision and strategic input for taking the company to the next level.
“She took the business about eight levels higher than it was,” said Thomas. “She had the brains and all the stuff it takes to soar. I just had good work ethic.”
Paige Thomas implemented a modern point-of-sale system, prioritized sales training, and introduced computer imaging technology, enabling clients to preview custom designs and engravings before they are completed.
The couple explored various locations for the expansion but were particularly drawn to Jackson.
“We’ve looked at other places. Jackson was the strongest,” Sam Thomas said.
They were impressed by the city’s vibrant community, income levels, strong school districts, and the active involvement of the Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce. The chamber’s retail and membership director, Janna Clifton, personally facilitated their introduction to the store’s future site.
“Being part of a small community or district is important to us,” said Paige Thomas. “People come here for a reason. That’s why we want to be in an area specifically for that purpose — to help local communities thrive.”
A Growing Team and Commitment to Craftsmanship
The Thomases split their time between the Sikeston and Jackson locations. Their team includes six employees in Sikeston, two remote workers, and three full-time staff members in Jackson. The Jackson team includes skilled goldsmiths Hector Romero and Sarah Parker.
Sam Thomas’s journey into goldsmithing began in Quincy, Illinois, after his time in the Marine Corps. Working at a pawnshop, he discovered an old goldsmith’s bench and decided to pursue the craft despite earning little.
“I did not care about how much I was getting paid. I did it for the knowledge,” he said.
Thomas eventually moved to Chicago to further his career before relocating to Sikeston. When a part-ownership deal fell through, he decided to open his own shop.
Starting with minimal inventory, including crystal figurines, a small selection of jewelry, and two quarter-carat diamonds, he worked tirelessly — often with his children by his side. Over time, his dedication paid off, enabling him to grow the business and even expand its living quarters.
“There’s nothing we can’t do with jewelry. There’s nothing we can’t fix; there’s nothing we can’t create,” said Thomas.
Customer-Centric Approach
Sam’s Fine Jewelry offers wish lists, allowing customers to create personalized lists of desired items. These lists help ensure gift-givers purchase items their loved ones will cherish.
“That way, whenever someone comes in to purchase for them, we are sure to get something they will enjoy and wear,” Paige Thomas explained.
Store Hours and Holiday Plans
The Jackson location of Sam’s Fine Jewelry is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. The store will also operate on the last two Mondays before Christmas and on Christmas Eve to accommodate holiday shoppers.
With its new location, Sam’s Fine Jewelry continues to uphold its commitment to craftsmanship, community, and customer satisfaction.
