Windsor Jewelry, a cherished institution in downtown Indianapolis, will close its doors after 105 years in business. The family-owned store, which has been a staple in the community since 1919, announced the closure on social media, citing the retirement of owners Greg and Lynn Bires.
Founded by Sig Asher, Windsor Jewelry was passed down to his son-in-law, Herman Logan, in 1940. Logan, a U.S. Air Force captain during World War II, later sold the business in 1997 to Greg Bires, then a 22-year-old employee. Greg and his wife, Lynn, have managed the store for nearly three decades.
Originally located on Illinois Street, the jewelry store moved to its current site on Meridian Street. In a statement to local NBC affiliate WTHR, Greg Bires described the decision to close as “bittersweet.”
“The last thing I wanted to do was leave this store. I don’t want to see it go anywhere,” Bires said. “Unfortunately, my age caught up with me, and I have a lot of grandchildren that I’m not able to visit as often as I like.”
While Bires considered selling the business, he acknowledged the challenges of securing funding. He expressed gratitude for the loyal support of his customers throughout the years. Windsor Jewelry is holding a liquidation sale for its remaining inventory, with plans to close by January 2025.
