When Buckhannon Mayor Robbie Skinner learned that the town’s longtime jeweler was retiring, he didn’t just look for a replacement – he became one himself. After two years of jewelry school and store renovations, Skinner and his wife, Lauren, celebrated the grand opening of The Squire on Main on Friday, bringing new life to the historic downtown area.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony, attended by members of the Buckhannon-Upshur Chamber of Commerce, family, friends, and local residents, marked the special occasion.
“We are excited to welcome the community to celebrate with us as we open The Squire on Main; it’s been a long time coming,” said Skinner.
When Jake Anderegg announced in 2022 that his store, Anderegg Jewelers, would be closing due to retirement, Skinner saw an opportunity. After speaking with Anderegg, he realized there was a significant need for a jeweler in downtown Buckhannon. Having been elected as mayor in 2020, Skinner decided to carry on the town’s jewelry legacy in his own way.
“Our motivation was to do the right thing for our community,” Skinner explained. “We wanted to keep a retail store on Main Street and create a classy, open-door space for the community. We want to help Main Street shine and keep it alive.”
Over the two years of renovations, Skinner enrolled in jewelry school to learn essential skills, such as sizing rings, resetting stones, and replacing watch batteries, to better serve local residents and their jewelry needs.
“It wasn’t until I went to jewelry school that I really fell in love with the craft,” Skinner said.
The store’s design is also a highlight. Lauren Skinner, co-owner of The Squire on Main, worked with family members to create a warm, inviting atmosphere for customers as soon as they walk in.
