After more than a century of serving the Indianapolis community, iconic jewelry store Windsor Jewelry is closing its doors for good on January 4. Located just steps away from Monument Circle, the store has been a staple in the city since 1919.
Owner Greg Bires, who has run the family business for decades alongside his wife, Lynn, announced his decision to retire at the age of 70. “I’ve decided it’s time for me to spend more time with my family,” Bires said. “So, we’re having a retirement ‘going out of business’ sale, with some items marked up to 80% off.”
The sale is drawing customers from all over, eager to purchase one of the shop’s treasured heirlooms before it closes for good. “The end date is January 4, so that’s just around the corner. We’re hoping to minimize the inventory before then,” Bires added.
Windsor Jewelry has weathered numerous historical events in its long history, from two pandemics to the Great Depression, multiple recessions, and even wartime challenges. Bires took over the business in 1998 and continued the shop’s legacy of serving generations of families. “The way we treat our customers has kept us going,” Bires said. “We’ve served fifth-generation families and many three or four-generation families.”
He added, “I have many dads who bought their engagement rings from me 30 years ago, now bringing their children in for their own engagement or wedding rings. That means a lot to me.”
While Bires plans to retire, he expressed hope that a potential buyer might step forward to continue the Windsor Jewelry legacy.
The store will remain open for its final days from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. until January 4.
