Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), in collaboration with HSI O’Hare, has seized approximately 5,200 pieces of 18 and 21-karat gold jewelry valued at over $3 million.
The jewelry was imported by a U.S. wholesaler who allegedly provided falsified documents and statements to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to misrepresent the country of origin, attempting to evade applicable U.S. tariffs. The importer falsely declared that the gold came from a tariff-exempt country, allowing the company to profit unlawfully.
In addition to customs fraud, the shipment contained numerous counterfeit pieces bearing unlicensed trademarks from well-known luxury brands.
HSI is actively investigating fraudulent activities within the jewelry supply chain, targeting importers, exporters, manufacturers, and retailers engaged in customs violations, financial fraud, and intellectual property infringement.
