Japan’s jewelry industry is renowned for its precision craftsmanship and innovative techniques, such as mokume-gane and kintsugi. At the heart of this industry is SJ Jewelry, a company that fuses traditional artistry with modern design to create timeless pieces admired globally.
A subsidiary of Sojitz Corporation, SJ Jewelry has deep roots in the historic Ueno Okachimachi district, which has long been a hub for jewelry-making. President Tadao Kawamura explains that during the Edo Period, craftsmen in Ueno Okachimachi crafted ornamental jewelry for hair and clothing accessories. “This tradition has been passed down and evolved into Western-style jewelry today,” he says.
SJ Jewelry continues to build on this rich cultural heritage, blending traditional Japanese aesthetics with contemporary design. The company’s collection includes a range of luxury brands, each with its own distinct style. Nina Ricci Prestige is known for its refined bridal pieces, inspired by haute couture, while Rugged Mind caters to a global audience with versatile designs. Romantic Blue, a standout collection, incorporates blue sapphires into bridal jewelry, symbolizing happiness and love.
Mr. Kawamura notes that Rugged Mind’s designs appeal to both men and women. “In Japan, men have traditionally been hesitant to wear jewelry, but the younger generation is changing that mindset. Many women also desire more masculine styles,” he says.
One of SJ Jewelry’s key strengths is its access to high-quality raw materials, thanks to its ties with Sojitz Corporation. As a comprehensive trading company, Sojitz ensures a stable supply of precious metals, including gold and diamonds, even during market fluctuations. “Our company was initially established as Sojitz’s precious metals department,” Kawamura explains. “Although gold prices have risen significantly, our partnership with Sojitz allows us to mitigate price fluctuations and secure a steady supply of materials needed for production.”
