A rare medieval ring, set with sapphire, emerald, and garnets, and once owned by a bishop, is set to be auctioned at Noonans Mayfair in London on March 26. With a high estimate of £18,000 (around $23,250), the ring is the most valuable item in the sale. Dating back to the late 12th century, it was discovered by metal detectorist and retired firefighter Mark Sell in Norfolk’s King Row in 2019.
The ring was temporarily displayed at the British Museum in London, which played a key role in facilitating the transfer of the find from Sell to the auction house. The proceeds from the sale will be shared with the landowner. Sell has yet to decide how he will use his portion of the proceeds.
