McNeil Jewelers to Close After 79 Years of Service

by Henry

After nearly 79 years of serving the Southern Tier, McNeil Jewelers will be closing its doors, marking the end of an era for the family-run business. Established in 1946, the jewelry store has been a staple in the community, offering its services through multiple generations of customers.

Patrick McNeil, the owner, shared the legacy of the business: “Our father started the business in 1946. He went to school on the G.I. Bill, came back, and called himself the ‘G.I. Jeweler.’ There were seven other jewelers in the town when he started, and we happened to be the last one at that point in time.”

In 1974, McNeil Jewelers moved to the heart of Downtown Norwich, where it became a central part of the town’s fabric. Brothers Jim and Patrick McNeil later took over the business, with Jim specializing in jewelry and Patrick focusing on watches.

Over the decades, McNeil Jewelers has been a part of many special moments for its customers, from engagements and weddings to graduations and other milestones. Their dedication to quality and service earned them the trust and loyalty of generations.

Kathy Meek, a long-time customer, expressed her gratitude: “They’ve taken care of my rings and my jewelry for years. I also got my wedding set from the shop.”

As the brothers retire and close the shop, they reflect on the strong bonds they’ve built with their customers, a connection they say they will always cherish.
