A group of school pupils from St Thomas Aquinas Secondary School in Glasgow has won this year’s START competition with a unique piece of jewelry designed to protect women.
The all-female team was awarded first place in the competition, which simulates the experience of participating in a business startup incubator for Scottish schools.
Their innovative idea combines existing tracking technology with jewelry to create a discreet and wearable safety device.
The jewelry, which can be worn as a pendant, bracelet, necklace, or earring, works through an app that stores emergency contact details. A button attached to the device sends the user’s location to their emergency contact.
Another feature allows the user to input an estimated time of arrival. If the user does not arrive on time, emergency contacts are automatically notified.
