Isaiah Sooklalsingh, a Trinidadian-born, Canadian designer, unveiled his vibrant jewellery collection, Dingolay, in Toronto on March 28. The collection is a tribute to his Caribbean roots, drawing inspiration from his experiences in Trinidad and Tobago.
Sooklalsingh, who now calls Toronto home, credits his time in Trinidad for shaping his design aesthetic. He developed a love for bold prints, bright colours, and patterns, elements that are central to his jewellery.
The name “Dingolay” is a popular local expression in Trinidad, often used to express happiness or excitement. It is also linked to musical and Carnival traditions, particularly after the 1988 release of Winston Bailey’s hit song Dingolay.
At 35, Sooklalsingh moved to Canada in 2014, having spent a decade in Trinidad after returning there in 2003. Reflecting on his time in the Caribbean, he said, “I spent ten years in Trinidad, and that decade has truly shaped my life. From the culture to the people to the experiences, it has shaped the way I view the world and influenced this passion for Dingolay.”
In a recent Zoom interview, Sooklalsingh shared that the inspiration for his jewellery line came naturally, blending his cultural heritage with his passion for design.
