Ken Steinkamp and Sandy Sikorski, now engaged, found themselves in awe as they stumbled upon the precious gemstone during a meal at a Rhode Island restaurant in December 2021. Although the establishment, Broad Restaurant, has since closed its doors, the memory of that serendipitous moment remains vivid for the pair.
Describing the experience as something straight out of a storybook, Steinkamp, 75, expressed his sentiment to USA Today, remarking, “This is a Hallmark story if there ever was one.” Sikorski, 70, recounted the surreal encounter, recalling how she unknowingly consumed the clam harboring the pearl, a culinary surprise that would soon take on profound significance in their lives.
A year-and-a-half later, Sikorski and her soon-to-be husband decided to immortalize their unusual find by incorporating the pearl into an engagement ring. The story swiftly gained traction within their close-knit beach community, with Sikorski noting the frequent recognition she receives when sporting the distinctive ring. “I am surprised every single time somebody says, ‘I know about this ring,'” she shared, highlighting its distinctive appearance amidst traditional diamond adornments.
Both having experienced divorce, the couple’s paths converged in 2018 through a dating app, setting the stage for a blossoming romance that would culminate in matrimony. On April 14, amidst the tranquil setting of Ocean House in Watch Hill, Rhode Island, Sikorski and Steinkamp will exchange vows in an intimate ceremony attended by 27 loved ones. Paying homage to their extraordinary tale, nods to the pearl’s discovery will be woven throughout the celebration, from the adornment of the wedding cake with pearls to the incorporation of pearl jewelry into the wedding party’s attire.
Remarkably, the couple’s affinity for uncovering pearls persisted even during preparations for their nuptials. During a recent cake tasting session in early March, a surprising twist unfolded as they stumbled upon yet another pearl, concealed within a delectable chocolate clam crafted by the chef at Ocean House. Hannah Bontempo, the catering and sales manager, recounted the couple’s story, prompting the pastry chef to infuse an extra touch of magic into their tasting experience.
As the couple eagerly anticipates their impending union, Sikorski holds a heartfelt hope that her ailing father, currently hospitalized, will be well enough to accompany her down the aisle. Despite the logistical challenges posed by his illness, Steinkamp underscores the importance of accommodating Sikorski’s caregiving responsibilities, a testament to their unwavering commitment to family.
