Botswana Diamonds (BOD) is pioneering a paradigm shift in diamond discovery through the application of artificial intelligence (AI), as reported by IDEX Online.
The UK-based exploration company is strategically utilizing AI to redefine the process of identifying new diamond reservoirs. BOD’s collaboration with the UK’s International Geoscience Services Limited has culminated in the development of “Xplore,” a cutting-edge “mineral prospectivity technology.”
John Teeling, Chairman of BOD, emphasized the formidable task of efficiently analyzing Botswana’s extensive mineral database, attributing the challenge to its sheer volume. Boasting the second-largest diamond exploration database in Botswana, comprising a staggering 380 gigabytes of data and 260,000 files, BOD’s reach spans approximately 95,000 square kilometers. This comprehensive database encompasses 375,000 kilometers of airborne geophysical data, 606 ground geophysical surveys, about 228,000 soil sample results, and 32,000 drill hole logs.
In a statement, BOD highlighted the AI-driven system’s capacity to mimic the cognitive processes of a geologist but with enhanced speed and efficiency. Through AI processing, vast datasets are meticulously scrutinized, identifying logical inconsistencies and subsequently rectifying them. This iterative process is anticipated to unveil novel insights, thereby revealing drillable targets previously concealed. Furthermore, Xplore boasts multifaceted capabilities beyond diamond detection, purporting to identify other valuable mineral deposits.
