Government Clarifies Re-Import Rules for Unsold Exhibition Jewellery

by Jasmine

The Ministry of Commerce & Industry has provided clarity on rules governing the re-import of unsold jewellery that was exported for exhibitions, following changes in import policies for specific jewellery categories. According to a recent Policy Circular (No. 05/2024-25), dated 13th June 2024, issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), certain jewellery items previously categorized as “Free” have now been moved to the “Restricted” category under the ITC (HS) Codes 71131912, 71131913, 71131914, 71131915, and 71131960.

This policy change, notified officially through Notification no. 17/2024-25 on 11th June 2024, outlines that Customs authorities will allow the re-import of unsold jewellery exported for exhibitions under these specific codes. Importantly, import licenses will not be required for this process, provided all Customs regulations are adhered to.

The clarification from DGFT is intended to streamline procedures for the re-import of jewellery that meets the outlined criteria, ensuring compliance with applicable Customs provisions.
