Rosmah Mansor has applied to halt legal proceedings initiated against her by Lebanon-based jeweller, Global Royalty Trading SAL, concerning the disappearance of more than 40 pieces of jewellery. Her lawyer, Rajivan Nambiar, disclosed that the application, submitted on June 7, seeks to pause the lawsuit until a decision is reached on her appeal at the Court of Appeal. This appeal challenges a previous High Court ruling that denied her request to involve the government and police in the case.
The application for the stay will be reviewed on August 16 in an online session before Judge Ong Chee Kwan, as confirmed by Nambiar during a conversation on Monday.
Global Royalty Trading SAL filed the lawsuit on May 29 last year, alleging that Rosmah had falsely claimed that 44 pieces of jewellery, which included diamond necklaces, bracelets, and tiaras sent to her by the company’s agent, were seized by Malaysian authorities under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.
Additionally, the jeweller asserted that Rosmah had wrongly shifted responsibility to the Malaysian government despite the jewellery going missing. Initially suing Rosmah in June 2018, Global Royalty Trading SAL demanded the return of the jewellery or a payment amounting to US$14.79 million. The lawsuit was withdrawn in 2019.
